Well, it's Sunday evening after a fantastically busy weekend. Apart from my cheffing duties I have found my self delivering to food4 customers all over Cornwall including the Lizard. A long drive down from HQ in Liskeard but what a beautiful spot. Today I was on the North coast, and having arrived at Watergate Bay a bit too early for my delivery I drove along the coast towards Morgan Porth and stopped off for a quick bite at Bre-Pen Farm Shop and tea room. If you are staying in the area the farm shop is really well stocked with lots of delicious local produce. Great Coffee too!

The Big Lunch
There can't be anyone left in the country who hasn't heard about the latest project from Tim Smit of the Eden Project: The Big Lunch! (If you haven't - check out the website http://www.thebiglunch.com/)
'Imagine on one day of the year, in every home across the nation, we all got up with a single purpose in mind. We are going to have lunch outside, on the street, with our neighbours. We will have prepared it ourselves. We will be doing our thing: a bring-your-own, open-air party for 61 million people. We are calling it simply The Big Lunch: a day - Sunday, July 19 - when, for four glorious hours, cars will stop, wardens will stop, egos will stop and Britain will come together in the street to meet, greet, share, sing, dance, play and laugh for no reason other than we all well need to.'

Great Day at the Royal Cornwall Show
.....and a chance to meet up with friends and neighbours. What's interesting is that every year, the links between Cornish farming and food get stronger and nowhere is this more evident than at the Royal Cornwall. Highlights of our visit - the poultry section (Jackie's next project = ducks at Coombe Farm, plus some replacement chickens), the eco-build section (Peter's interested in building a wind turbine), plus - of course - the food marquees. Needless to say, we came home with plenty of goodies!

A taste of summer
I couldn't miss the Elder trees are starting to flower as I drove Denise (one of our Food4 vans) home through the country lanes this evening. It will soon be time for Elderflower fritters - one of our favourite summer treats. Simply pick the whole flower heads (leave a little stalk to hold whilst dipping), give them a good rinse in cold water then dip them in a thin batter. shallow fry them in hot oil until they are just golden. Dust in icing sugar and enjoy. The perfect way to end a summer bar-be-que!
- Don't pick wild food unless you are sure of what you are picking! - a far easier way to enjoy one of the great flavours of summer is to pour yourself a chilled glass of Elderflower presse from our good friends at Cornish Orchards!

What a day!
Congrats to Jackie and Peter on their review in The Guardian today, outstanding and much deserved! Beautiful day in Cornwall, I was over delivering on the North coast just now, Watergate Bay was just buzzing, especially Jamie O's as was Newquay with 'The Run to the Sun' event this bank holiday weekend, VW's everywhere, I used to have one back in my slightly younger days, split back window, left hand drive........I digress. Incidentally Rock was glorious too with the sailing fraternity in their element. Enjoy your bank holiday weekend!

The Guardian's Top Tip!
Fame at last! Jackie & Peter's holiday cottage was featured in today's Travel Guardian - along with a nice 'top tip' featuring food4myholiday.The journalist loved the food at Well Cottage - we showed them the heavy horses working at Skye Grove Organics (http://www.skyegroveorganics.co.uk/) - (one of food4myholiday's suppliers and handily - one of our neighbours in Herodsfoot). Iain came over and did a spot of personal cheffing for them, - 'like Saturday Kitchen' they said!

Camel Valley wins Gold!
Talking recently about our friends at Camel Valley Vineyard, near Bodmin, they just won first prize at the International Wine Challenge for its Bacchus 2007 wine. It is the first time that Camel Valley has won a medal for a non-sparkling white wine. Its sparkling wine triumphed as well, however, winning gold in the Decanter World Wine Awards.
Delighted winemaker Sam Lindo said: “We’re paralysed with excitement, it’s more than we could have hoped for. There’s been a lot of stuff in the press about British sparkling wines, but this shows we can do it with still wines as well.”

Real Veal
At food4 we are very happy to be selling more and more of the welfare friendly, outdoor reared, rose veal produced here in South-east Cornwall by our good friends Jon & Vicky at Bocaddon Farm - The Real Veal Company. Veal has had a bad press in the past but Jon and Vickie's approach to raising and producing this beautiful meat is truly commendable. For any one interested in the subject have a look at the short documentary film on there face book page.

New spice kit
New research shows that we are becoming more adventurous in the kitchen, both at home and on holiday. A survey by Schwartz has revealed that nearly half of us are experimenting with new flavours in food and a quarter of us are using more herbs and spices than we did a year ago. Our favourites are basil, oregano, cinnamon, paprika, crushed chillies, ginger, curry and thyme. Crucially, herbs and spices are also seen as a inexpensive way to add flavour to food. This then is the perfect time to let you know you can purchase our very own food4myholiday spice kit for just £2.89 from our online shop. You will find it in the 'seasonal specials' or 'larder and pantry' page. Bam! kick it up a notch as American celebrity Chef Emeril Lagasse says!

One step Closer......
Jackie Nick and I have just spent 2 really exciting days working on the scale up of our ready meal project. Over the course of 2 days we produced over 280 meals!
It seems like only yesterday that we were in our own kitchens at home working on the origonal recipies. It was a facinating excercise, dressed in lab coats and hairnets and weighing out microgrammes worth of salt and pepper. Big thanks to Colin for all your help and guidance.
Look out, our range of TWOchefs ready meals is one step closed to your dining table......

Which? Holiday Magazine
North Cornwall is one of the top ten places to visit in the UK this year, according to Which? Holiday magazine. Makes sense to us! -great beaches, great landscapes (and great holiday value, with no need to worry about the value of the euro!). The Which? Holiday magazine waxes lyrical, describing the area as 'shrouded in mystery and intrigue...it is truly an emotive landscape that inspires more with every visit.' Can't disagree with any of that - but PLEASE Cornwall's not just about myths and legends - contemporary food, arts, crafts, music ...we've got it all!

Sharks in Cornwall?
Well, dolphins actually ....contrary to press reports, the 'sharks' were definitley dolphins:
Jules Webb says 'The surfer in the photo is my husband , spence and he still has both legs, last time I looked!check out www.falmouthsurfschool.blogspot.com for more information and THE photo.' So all you wannabe surfers out there - fear not, Cornwall's still the place to learn !
In South East Cornwall we can recommend Discovery Surf http://www.discoverysurf.com/ at Whitsand Bay, and www.activecornwall.co.uk for surfing and loads of other adventures throughout Cornwall!

Real Veal
Popped over to Boccadon Farm on Thursday to pick up some supplies from Jon who had just returned from a day at Exeter farmers market. I also met Valerie who came rushing out to show me the yogurt and milk they are producing along side their tremendous (and awarding winning) cheese, a great example of what quality local food is all about. Read: dedication to the cause! www.boccadonfarmveal.com I'm just about to make a little veal stir fry for dinner so must dash......

Expo West
We went over to Wadebridge on Wednesday to Cornwall's largest catering trade show known as Expo West. Had a good look around and bumped into lots of friends and food producers although the absence of smaller producers was noticeably from previous years. Enjoyed a quick lunch at The St. Kew Inn on the way back, just off the the St. Kew highway. Trust me, this pub is bucking the current trend of pubs in free fall, its a classic village pub in the very best sense complete with great food, massive car park and a fab beer garden, get there before the summer crowds!

Wild Garlic
We were running down the nature trail from Seaton to Hessenford this morning when suddenly we were hit with unmistakable pungent aroma that is wild garlic, "you cant stop now" Kelli said, I'll be back later I thought, a steaming hot bowl of baked potato soup with wild garlic pesto came to mind.......

Cooking at Well Cottage
I had a really great evening cooking for the honeymooners staying at wonderful Well Cottage last night! http://www.wellcottagecornwall.co.uk/ I took great pride in being able to tell the story of each of the locally produced ingredients on the menu.
They particularly enjoyed the John Dory with hand picked crab which I cooked for their main course and they couldn't believe how fresh the fish was. It reminded me how lucky we are here in South East Cornwall having such great day boat fish landed in Looe literally the day it has been caught. You really can't get fresher than that without catching it yourself! You can see a 'live' summary of the fish being landed in Looe ready for the next market at 6.30 the next morning at http://www.looe-fish-selling.co.uk/

Channel 4 Time Team in Looe!
For a different view of Looe and Looe Island (or St George's Island) watch Channel 4s Time Team, 5.30pm this Sunday -Tony Robinson and the crew filmed here last June and the resulting programme should be fascinating...

Young Chefs
The food4 team have just returned from the Taste-South East Cornwall Young Chef of the Year competition http://www.taste-southeastcornwall.com/ sponsored by Caradon District Council and held at Trelaske Hotel near Looe. http://www.trelaskehotel.com/
Today's winner was Sam Parry from Liskeard School although it was a close fought event with Gabriella Lake from Looe School and Tom Sainsbury from Saltash tied joint second. Hat's off to them all and to all those who came along and supported the event. Check out the local newspapers in the next week or two for full details and pictures. This is the second year for the competition I've organised on behalf of TSEC with help from the Taste committee. Many thanks to all including special thanks to compere and fellow judges Richard McGeown from Couch's in Polperro, Carol Trewin from the Western Morning News and Ross Lewin from Trelaske.

Setting up for spring
This a great time of year, anticipating how the year is going to pan out, I talk in terms of new crops, new growers, new producers and new suppliers and well as new holiday cottage partners to deliver to and work with. I'm still buzzing about the micro greens we sampled at Keveral Farm last week! http://www.keveral.org/

Keveral Farm
Tuesday saw me and Iain head up to Keveral Farm just over the hill from where we both live to visit with Sean, the top man at Keveral. We are on a mission to find out how we can work closer together with KF, Buttervilla Farm and Skygrove Organic this year. Both Iain and me (when we had restaurants in Looe) were fans and used their combined produce, even before 15 and Jamie O came onto the scene and discovered their awesome crops. KF (which has been registered as Organic for the past 25 years) is set on 4o acres of downright peaceful and fertile land just above Seaton. Sean takes us on a tour, there's even more than I remember from my last visit and their development of micro greens is particularly fascinating, and incredibly tasty too with Sean plucking numerous varieties for us to try as we go! These guys are really into experimental growing, in fact Sean tells us he's just send some of in the post to Heston Blumenthal! More later
